The adults went back to their nest on the smaller lake recently to start a second brood but a Coot family had taken up residence so luckily for us they moved over the road onto the ex floating reedbed.
The productivity of the Killy Great Crested Grebe pair has been something to behold in recent years John. Just been watching them today and the youngsters are growing quickly. Cheers.
It was nice to see a pair at Killy at such close quarters again Brian. It took me back a few years to when I followed a pair right through from courtship. The floating reedbed was a joy to behold back then and with the Grebes, Swans, Coots, Mallards and Moorhen all breeding in amongst it, not to mention Sedge Warblers and Reed Buntings amongst others calling by, you had a cracking seat on the wall when the sun was shining. Any further talk about doing something with it ??
The work on a new reed-bed was delayed when Sam and I informed our contact in the Parks Dept that the grebes were nesting on the structure. So it shouldn't be too long before we see some progress John. A grant was obtained so that this work could be done. I still have some reservations as to what is going to happen as I heard some comments as to attempts to prevent nesting birds (now can you believe that?). I'm never too sure where the truth lies. There's a small core of people that blame everything on the Mute Swans. Best wait and see what happens. I gave up long ago trying to get across that it was the severe winters that saw off the reed-bed as I rarely got a sensible reply.
John doesn't care whether they are Humbugs or Everton Mints he just reaches into the passenger door on my car and eats whatever is in there although I must admit he has bought the sweeties the last 2 weekends we were out. Howay The Toon. This is definitely the best confectionery/footballing blog on the net. Whoops have just spilt my gin and tonic over the keyboard
I knew as soon as you continued the theme of confectionary that the BLAGGER from Howdon would have something to say about it Peter. I've not seen Everton Mints for years.
He had an Everton Mint from one of my packets a few weeks ago, but got to admit he does ask and he even bought some when there was 2 packets in the door and one in my bag. Now we could change the subject to Chips.................and you would probably get comments from Meds and BHGs for his generosity, with my chips.
